Rajnath to convene NE CMs’ meet in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Reiterating their position to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said in an all-party meeting that they will not allow any move to place any controversial legislation in the Rajya Sabha.

Sources said that Azad cleared the Congress and its UPA allies’ position during the meeting that took place at the Vigyan Bhawan annexure ahead of the last budget session of the present government.

Azad in a meeting with Assam MPs at his residence on Wednesday had assured the members that “the Congress will oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.”

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called for an urgent meeting with all the Chief Ministers of the north-eastern States on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The meeting will take place at the North Block at 3 pm. Such a meeting was earlier convened by Rajnath Singh himself after unrest erupted in the Northeast following the Government’s decision to pass the controversial Bill. In a recent meeting with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Singh had said that the Home Ministry will convene a meeting of all the Chief Ministers of the north-eastern States at the earliest.
