Will Take People Into Confidence, Says Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)

GUWAHATI: The AGP has made it clear that it will have to work in tandem with other parties of the Northeast on all common issues so as to get the better of forces inimical to Assam and the region. Upon his arrival from New Delhi on Thursday, AGP president Atul Bora addressed the media at party headquarters in Guwahati. Bora said: “We need to keep watch on any move against Assam and other States of the Northeast from the Centre.” Bora cautioned the Centre not to hurt the self-respect of the people of Assam and other States in the region. “We’re brave fighters. The Assamese have precedents of winning wars. The win against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 is the outcome of consciousness and unity of the indigenous people of the State and the Northeast. On all common issues in the future, we need to work in tandem with other parties of the region to get the better of forces inimical to us.”

On future plans of the party, Bora said: “We’re going to take steps by taking all organizations and people of the State into confidence. All decisions will be taken after a thorough discussion in the party.”

Bora thanked Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, leaders of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh for their role in thwarting the Citizenship Bill. He also thanked leaders of the AASU and 30 other organizations, the NESO, the AJYCP, Axam Xahitya Xabha, the SAKP and the people of the State for the courage they have shown against the Bill.
