GOLAGHAT, Jan 5: Activists of Hamdoi ri Suraksha Sangstha, mbor ri Suraksha Samiti and Hamdoiporia ri Suraksha Samiti staged a dhar near the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday to protest against sale of foreign liquor and local liquor in the village areas.  In a petition signed by members of women orgainizations, it was stated that availability of liquor in village areas was harming families. In the villages, local-made liquor (sulai) is available even in a small paan shop also. The members alleged that increase in alcohol consumption had led to increase in crimes like rape, theft and robbery. They alleged that many times they had complained to the police officials in this regard, but in reply the police said that it was not their duty and people should instead go to the excise department to complain.  More than 200 activists of women organizations took part in this demonstration. A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat.
