Women Co-operative Societies Flourishing in Tripura: Women Empowerment

Guwahati: In order to strengthen the abilities of the co-operative movement as an effective tool for attaining self-reliance as well as generating income and rural employment in the rural areas of Tripura, a total number of 142 women co-operative societies have been formed in the state. This was informed by the Co-operative Department under the Tripura government.

It may be noted that earlier, number of Co-operative societies in the state was 1,605 in the year 2004-05 which rose to 1,732 in 2012-13 and further to 1,748 in 2013-14. The total membership of these cooperative societies was 5.37 lakh in 2004-05 which rose to 6.52 lakh in 2012-13 and 8.32 lakhs in 2013-14. There were a total of 130 Co-operative Societies in the state which were run by women. However, the number rose to 142 this year thus enhancing the growth of women empowerment in India.

It needs to be mentioned that women play an active role in promoting the economic status of the country through co-operative sectors and social aspect of women's development is much more influenced by their economic development and vice versa.

According to a report, published by Economic Review of Tripura, state's economy is characterized by a high rate of poverty, low per capita income, low capital formation inadequate infrastructure progress in the industrial field and high unemployment problem.

The report published in the Economic Review of Tripura also suggested that the main objective of the department of Co-operation is to facilitate all-round development of Co-operative with special emphasis on the backward classes including tribals by promoting self-employment opportunities especially in the rural areas and to provide an additional source of income for farmers and rural artisans.

It may be mentioned that as per various other reports, with the formation of Women’s Industrial Cooperatives, Women’s Cooperative Banks and Women’s Multi-Purpose Societies across India under the Co-operative Movement, women empowerment have gained ample ground.

It may also be added that Co-operatives have been providing many varied opportunities for women participation. No doubt, their standard of living has improved by manifold by the income the women earn from Co-operatives and their quality of life is enhanced due to social awareness, entrepreneurship, development of skills, increased participation in the affairs of Cooperatives leading to better understanding and utility.

It has been seen that most of the Women Cooperatives in India have proven very successful, despite facing cutthroat competition in the market.
