JOYSAGAR, Dec 31:  ‘When there was no one to listen you, better you go alone’. This very popular verse of Kabiguru Rabindrath became a reality in Sivasagar district. In recent times, many women have emerged victorious in the struggle of life. Some widows and divorced women of Soraguri Chapari in Desangmukh Development Block under Sivasagar district had to face a lot of problems in their life. Two such women, Ponchi Chutia and Dumfi Panging met each other one day and became friends. Ponchi and Dumfi then started animal husbandry and also cultivation in land that they were allotted by the local panchayat on the bank of Desang river. Thus, their journey began.

Other women like Zulia, Seuti, Juri, Karabi, rzi, Karbi and Soruaai also joined them and the number continued to grow. These women are now busy in winter cultivation on the bank of the Desang river and they have cultivated mustard seeds in about 15 bighas of land. Besides, vegetables are also being cultivated in about 8 bighas of land. They have also taken up poultry farming, piggery and goatery.

All work is done by the women and time-to-time they get agriculture loan with the help of the local panchayat and development block office. Milk and milk products are also produced by the women as they have 40 cows in their farm. These women, who were once deprived and faced atrocities, have set an example of women empowerment and have become an inspiration for women.
