Women panel blames pornographic sites for rise in rape cases

FROM OUR REPORTER

SHILLONG, April 24: The Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) has attributed the increasing rape cases in the state to the rapid growth of technology.

“I feel the main reason for the increase of rape cases in the state is due to the explosion of technology,” Theilin Phanbuh, MSWC chairperson said.

She informed that the commission had also written to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in 2014 to block pornographic sites.

“Even in the South Asian countries they have blocked pornographic sites so why can’t we do it here in our country,” she said.

According to her, when young children can easily access such sites from the internet then they are bound to be tempted in doing awful things.

She stressed that the state government should also take an initiative regarding the matter.

“We had also spoken to the then chief secretary of Meghalaya on in this regard but he told us that it is very difficult since everything is being transmitted directly through satellite,” she said.

She pointed out that parents should play an important role to check and monitor what their children doing. “If the parents are really concerned about their children’s welfare then once they detect that there is something wrong with their child they should immediately take them to counselors,” she said.
