Workshop on Free and Open Source Software organised by MLCU

SHILLONG, Sept 16: With the main objective to familiarise the students with the use of Free and Open Source softwares, the Department of Computer Sciences, Martin Luther Christian University organized a three day workshop on Free and Open Source Software from September14. The workshop concluded on Friday.

The workshop which was facilitated by Shiva Acharjee, Senior Software Engineer, NETechno Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore, and organized in collaboration with the NSS Unit, MLCU. The workshop was held in the MLCU campus and participated by all the students from the Department of Computer Sciences.

One of the main objectives of this workshop is to introduce students to Free and Open Source software and also how to quickly develop and deploy a website using Word Press, which is one of the free and open source software that is available.

Every year this workshop is conducted with emphasis on the advantages and usage of the different available Free and Open Source softwares. In 2015, the workshop was done on Libre Office software which is similar to MS Office, where Libre office is free and open source while MS Office is Proprietary.

In the workshop the students were introduced to many FOSS, CNS and WordPress with a special emphasis on WordPress and also discussions on the advantages of free and open source software against proprietary softwares were also held with the students.

In the valedictory function, the Deputy Registrar, Dr. L Kharpuri, congratulated the students on the success of the workshop and said that the Free and Open Source softwares are the future and added that the students should keep the momentum of the excitement of the workshop and work towards bettering themselves.
