World Cancer Day observed

GUWAHATI, Feb 5: The World Cancer Day was observed on Saturday by Vigen India, North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (NECHRI) in collaboration with University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) and Nerim Group of Institutions at Hatigoan area of the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Gitartha Roymedhi said, “Diseases cannot take away the pleasure of Living. A disease like cancer can invade our body but not our soul.”

“If we fight together we can overcome the battle against cancer. Cancer doesn’t mean the death. We should stay positive in every step of life and walk carrying the hope with us. We should not surrender our dreams and aims to any disease. If we could together win the Battle of Saraighat then we can win this battle too,” he said.

The event was iugurated by Bubul Choudhuri, Regiol Mager, Vigen India. While interacting with media he said that Healthcare is a social work and Vigen India is always prepared for the society. The programme was attended by over 120 people. Dr. M. N. Baruah of North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute was the chief guest. Senior consultants Dr Tushar Kanti Chakrabarti and Dr. Sanghamitra Bora from the same institution were also present. Along with them popular cine star of the state Jatin Bora, intertiol and tiol power lifters from the state Anjan Bujorbarua and Vishnu Das respectively were also present as the guests of honour.

Dr M N Baruah delivered an attractive presentation on early detection and prevention of cancer. He focused on the role of Tobacco in causing the most scared disease. Dr. Baruah threw lights on the other probable causes of cancer, its early signs and symptoms and methods of early detection.

He also said that this disease is curable if detected early. Vishnu Das explained the people about the necessities of physical fitness which is required to stay disease free. The employees of NECHRI also felicitated and awarded a young cancer survivor for her incredible fight against the disease.

Bhaswati Sharma, president of Samriddhi said that the NGO will always provide necessary aid to the needy and suffering cancer patients.  The programme followed by a street play performed by students of Nerim supported by USTM to spread the real facts about cancer to the society flagged off by cine star Jatin Bora. The title of the play was “Cancer is Curable.”
