Silchar, May 29: Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC), Silchar, is going to observe World No Tobacco Day on June 2. The programme will start from 6.30 pm at Goldighi Municipal Mall, near a book store, Batayan. The programme includes an evening of music interspersed with messages on tobacco, speeches, exhibition, quiz show and a host of games. The programme has been planned for creating awareness among the people regarding the ill effects of tobacco consumption. Tobacco related diseases and illness cause more than 1 million deaths in a year in India. It causes death in almost every 6 seconds.

According to a report of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), tobacco use is related to nearly 30% of all cancers in men and women in India. Consumption of tobacco causes several diseases and also harms the individual. It affects the national economy through increased healthcare costs and decreased productivity. It is imperative to work towards a tobacco free India.
