World’s highest weather stations installed at Mt. Everest

The world now has its highest operating weather stations and much to one’s astonishment, these weather stations are being installed on Mt Everest, Earth's highest mountain above sea level. The news on the installation of the weather stations has been announced by the National Geographic Society on June 13. The most beneficial factors of threes weather stations are that the researchers, climbers, and the public will be able to avail near real-time information about mountain conditions.

The weather stations are going to make it much easier for the climbers to decide when to climb the mountain and when not along with the probable bad weather conditions at which one should take particular precaution or avoid mountaineering.

National Geographic Society’s Marketing and Communications Director Fae Jencks says, “The multidisciplinary team Installed the world’s two highest operating automated weather stations at Balcony area (8,430 m) and South Col (7,945 m), as well as three other weather stations on Mt Everest.”

The rest of the weather stations were placed at Phortse (3,810 m), Everest Base Camp (5,315 m) and Camp II (6,464 m). the director further adds that each of these weather stations will record data on temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction.

The data received from these weather stations will help in communities responding to climate risks. Thus, the threats to the lives and livelihoods of the locals that account to more than one billion will be safe. It will also be easy for the disaster management authority to take the necessary precaution when it comes to facing any natural hazard in the future.

Jencks also added, “The Balcony weather station is the first weather station installed at an elevation above 8,000 meters, meaning it will also be the first to sample the stratosphere as natural variations in the atmospheric boundaries change over time.”
