SILCHAR, Sept 29: Unidentified miscreants broke open the lock of the temple dedicated to god Shani and defiled the idol placed inside at Church Road area of the town in the wee hours today. The miscreants stole gold and silver orments from the body of the deity. After desecrating the Shani idol, they threw it away at a place nearby which was discovered by the morning walkers. Immediately, it raised a hue and cry drawing the attention of the people of the area and the members of the magement committee.

The maging committee of the temple informed the Sadar police station and TSI R P Rongmei along with police team came to the spot and made prelimiry investigation, about which nothing could be known. However, Rongmei told this scribe that the police is conducting a thorough investigation and the culprits behind the crime would soon be brought to book. A top VHP functiory who came to the spot demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants involved in yet another instance of defiling a temple.

BJP Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, district committee president Kaushik Rai and other frontline leaders visited the temple and took note of the development, expressing their shock and dismay that the mischievous elements were desperate enough to commit one after another heinous crimes. It was surprising that the miscreants did not take away cash in the locked box which could easily be tampered with and opened. It was equally surprising that the Axis Bank on the opposite side of the temple has two security guards who did not have any inkling of what happened just a few steps from them.
