Young bikers' mece at Borpukhuri bank

SIVASAGAR, August 3: The bank of  historic Borpukhuri beside the Shiv Doul, Devi Doul and Bishnu Doul has of late  become the accident zone where the mece of young bikers who indulge in eve teasing, rash riding and flouting traffic norms is extremely rampant. On any evening, bikers are seen zooming past pedestrians, cyclists and devotees who visit the douls, often wearing no helmets.

After the death of two pedestrians near the gate of the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner’s office a year ago, another accident left three persons injured on Saturday evening when a bike and Activa collided head on.

Siddhartha Chetia, an employee in the office of the Deputy Commissioner (NRC Cell) was coming from office on his bike bearing registration number AS-04/D-7722, when a speeding Activa bearing registration number AS-04/M-6198 coming from the opposite direction of Post Office hit Chetia’s bike head-on. Chetia suffered serious injuries on his face and head.

Additiol Superintendent of Police Debasish Sharma, who at the same time was going by that way, found Chetia unconscious and sent him to a nearby hospital. The other two, identified as Wasib Hussain and Afridi Khan of Dhaiali area, received minor injuries and were also sent to hospital. Chetia later sent to Dibrugarh where he was undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened due to over-speeding of the Activa. “Wasib and his pillion Afridi was moving at a high speed on the Activa, as a result of which the impact of collision was quite high,” said a policeman who witnessed the accident.
