Youth Congress leader demands repair of Gammon bridge

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, Jan 20: The condition of Gammon Bridge, one of the oldest bridges over river Barak along the tiol Highway 6 in Katigorah constituency that connects Barak Valley with the State capital and three other adjoining states including Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram, is in a deplorable state. Huge cracks and potholes have developed all over the bridge resulting in problems in movement of vehicular traffic plying over the bridge. An untoward accident may happen any time due to negligence on part of the authorities concerned.

Besides, cracks have developed all over tiol highway 6 which connects Barak Valley with the state capital and the adjoining states. The residents of the area along with the vehicle owners are suffering due to lack of proper maintence of the bridge and the tiol highway. It was stated in a memorandum sent to Tarun Gogoi, chief minister of Assam, by Daiyan Hussain, tiol secretary, All India Youth Congress Committee, on Monday. Daiyan Hussain further said that Gammon Bridge is the sole lifeline of the residents of Katigorah constituency to Guwahati and other parts of the region.

The cracks are getting deeper on the bridge which has led to vehicle owners finding it extremely difficult to vigate their vehicles in the bridge. The long neglected bridge may collapse at any moment. Besides, the condition of tiol Highway 6 which is riddled with potholes, has become so worse that the people may lose connectivity with other parts of the country in near future. Long unprecedented jams are occurring on the highway for the past few days. At any time of the day, there are long queues of vehicles, both passenger and goods carrying, on the pothole-riddled highway.

Daiyan Hussain urged upon the chief minister to look into the issue and direct the officials concerned of Departments of PWD (Roads) and tiol Highway Authority of India for repair of Gammon Bridge and tiol Highway 6. Daiyan Hussain further said that the residents of Katigorah would forever be grateful to the Chief Minister if appropriate steps are taken by him regarding the issue of surface connectivity of the constituency.
