'Youth today more inclined towards popular films with no social value'

TINSUKIA, Oct 11: “The Assamese film industry which was dying for its failure to impress upon common masses has begun to rejuvete following production of good Assamese films in recent times. Merely keeping regiol sentiments and emotions high, the industry cannot sustain and over-rule outside cinema unless young masses change their mind set,” said Jiacheng Jai Dohutia, a young film-maker whose film Haanduk- the hidden corner won tiol Award for best feature film (Regiol Language) this year.

Delivering the 4th Mayuri Bora Memorial Lecture on Monday at Tinsukia College on the topic entitled ‘Meaningful Cinema-Social Understanding and Responsibilities of today’s youth’, Dohutia observed that today’s youth was more inclined towards popular films which carried no social value other than short-lived entertainment. Due to this factor, majority theatre owners often decline to screen regiol films despite high social significance.

Chaired by Dr Bhuban Gogoi, Principal of Tinsukia College, the memorial lecture was followed by screening of Haanduk which was appreciated by the audience. Earlier, producer of the film Srikumar Dohutia, a noted historian, along with members of Haanduk team were felicitated with phulam gamosa, cheleng chadar and xarai. The director also participated in the interactive session.
