First ever workers' union in private hospital in the State

SHILLONG, Nov 19: The staff of zareth Hospital, Shillong today made history by forming the first ever workers union in a privately owned hospital. The union, christened as the zareth Hospital Workers Union (NHWU), was formally announced at Bethany Society Complex. Speaking on the occasion, Kenneth Swer, president of NHWU said, “The formation of this union is a historic one since this is the first union in the state of Meghalaya which is being formed in a private hospital and before all this materialized we had to inquire from many legal experts on the criteria to from the union and filly on November 16 we received the certificate of registration of trade union from the Labour Department.” The president informed that there are currently 140 members in the Union including three invitee members from TUR. Meanwhile, Silverter Iangrai, general secretary of NHWU said, “The aim and objective of the union is to organize the workers at the hospital and coordite their activities.” He said that the union will also strive for better facilities and condition of work, better living conditions, to secure livable wage for all the members and to bring about a progressive improvement in the standard of living of each worker.
