Guwahati: Twin earthquakes rocked the Northeast Indian states of Manipur and Mizoram in the wee hours of the morning on Monday (July 20).

A 3.5 magnitude earthquake jolted the Ukhrul district of Manipur at 2:30 am at latitude 24.98 North and Longitude 94.63 East at a depth of 10 kilometres. Shortly afterwards, an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter Scale occurred at 3:39:38 am at latitude 23.24 North and Longitude 93.29 East at a depth of 20 kilometres, in the Champhai district.

Before this, an earthquake in Mizoram measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, hit the state at 15:56:42 IST on Friday, officials said. The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres at Latitude 23.17 and Longitude 93.22. The epicentre of the earthquake 33 km south of southwest Champhai in Mizoram, the National Centre of Seismology stated.Mizoram, the second least populous State in the country, has recorded successive earthquakes since June 22, when a moderate earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale, shook the Champhai district and adjoining areas, damaging more than 31 structures, including roads, buildings and important installations.

Besides Champhai, a series of tremors also hit Saitual and Serchhip districts since June 22. Seismologists consider the mountainous Northeast region as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.
