Akumjung Pongen from the North-East state of Nagaland has been selected as the first person to receive the prestigious Indian Rhodes scholarship for the year 2022.

He is among five students from India selected for this academic implementation through scholarship in Oxford University, England.

Stephen's North East society wishes with heartiest congratulations to Akumjung Pongen for his great achievement of securing the Rhodes scholarship. The society aims to promote the diverse culture of northeast India. The society informed that Akumjung Pongen is not just an important part of Stephen's North East society but he is also a valuable friend and incredible human.

Stephen's society further added that the achievement of Pongen in receiving the Rhodes scholarship stands testament and is nothing short of a praiseworthy academic and deserving personality regarding him as the first torchbearer for people of the northeast.

The academic interest of Pongen lies mainly in fields of philosophy and theology as per a press release by Rhodes scholarship. He is a student of the final year in the Philosophy department at Saint Stephen's College located in New Delhi became the first Indian Rhodes Scholar from Kohima, Nagaland.

Along with his studies, Pongen has also an interest in making philosophy accessible to the people of the country mainly by the process of translating the concept of Philosophy into his mother language. Pongen is also a singer by passion and profession who loves playing piano and classical guitar.

Other than Pongen the four Indian students selected for the Rhodes scholarship are Dr. Aishwarya Vedula from Hyderabad, Dr. Varod Puntambekar from Maharashtra, Adrija Ghosh from West Bengal, and Ritika Mukherji from Delhi. The achievement of Akumjung Pongen brings a moment of pride for not just the state of Nagaland but also for the entire northeast.

The candidate can be eligible for the Rhodes scholarship only if he/she is an Indian Citizen with a passport of India or have other proof of citizenship. The candidate must have completed the formal education from an institution in India for a minimum of 4 years. The deadline for the submission of the application for the India Rhodes scholarship was 23:59 IST, Monday 2 August 2021.
