Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has 596 non-functional elementary and secondary schools having zero enrolment; state Education Minister Taba Tedir informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to a question raised in the assembly, the minister informed that the department had received a list of 596 such schools from Deputy Commissioners and Deputy Directors of school education from various districts.

He said the list was provided to the department after the State Cabinet on August 10 last year decided to get the list of such 254 elementary schools and 19 secondary schools having zero enrolment as per Unified District Information on School Education (UDISE) data verified.

“The department is actually going to close such non-functional zero enrolment schools and will focus on strengthening functional schools,” the minister said adding, the government has asked the respective DDSEs to re-examine the school and to make it functional if feasible.

Responding to a supplementary from Tashi, the minister assured the house to examine whether such schools could be allowed to run by NGOs.

To another question on how to handle with the assets and infrastructure already created for such schools including the land donors, Tedir said that the department had already constituted a committee to examine the matter and when the report is made available, the government would take a suitable decision.
