72-hour ICR bandh is illegal: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Talo Potom

ITANAGAR: The Itanagar Capital Complex (ICC) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Talo Potom said that the 72-hour bandh call by a few individuals on May 10 to 12 is ‘illegal’, and the district administration has imposed the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 2014. Addressing the media at the DC office on Monday, DC Talo Potom said that the District Administration (DA) has issued an order under 144 CrPC following apprehension of violence and disturbance of peace and tranquility within the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).
He said the proposed 72-hour ICR bandh is ‘illegal’, and the DA has imposed the Unlawful Activities Act to detain and arrest the bandh callers. The action under the act is being carried out by police personnel, who will be more active starting May 9. Under the act, police personnel can arrest or detain people violating the order. “This time the order issued is different from any of the earlier orders because this time the administration is working to suppress the bandh call by taking strong action. We have also directed the police personnel to conduct strict checking and seize any kinds of weapons,” he said, adding that the DA is also planning a flag march within the ICR to bring confidence to the public and oppose such bandh calls.
Following the reports of the bandh call, the DA also issued an order to all the arms shops in ICR to shut down their respective shops. Also, it has been directed to deposit all the arms and ammunition in the nearest police station for safety until normalisation of the situation. Moreover, orders have also been issued to close the wine shop, assembling more than three people. “There may be violence during the bandh call, which ultimately will create disturbance in the peace and tranquility prevailing in the entire capital complex. Hence, it has been directed to the respective shopkeepers to remove the gravel, stones, boulders, iron pipes, tyres, etc. from nearby shops lying along NH415,” he added.
He said the bandh call or any other activity that causes disturbance to society is unconstitutional and no longer democratic.
