AAPSU highlights plight of capital schools

Itanagar, June 7: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) that various government-run schools in and around the capital complex have been functioning without subject teachers, ministerial staff and proper infrastructure.

An AAPSU team, led by its vice president (protocol) Tayuk Sonam and education secretary Prem Camdir Tallong visited a few government schools, including the higher secondary schools in Ganga and Jote, and the primary schools in Ganga and Hilltop Colony. The team claimed to have found shortage of subject teachers, ministerial staff and poor infrastructure in all the schools they visited. The school building of the GHSS Ganga, which was constructed under MsDP, has been handed over to the school authority without carrying out electrical wiring, it said.

“Reportedly,” the union said, “the entire electrical wiring and fittings, including bulbs, fans, etc, were managed and installed by the school authorities from their own sources.” The union said the primary school in Hilltop Colony is located in a landslide prone area and is without boundary fencing, which it said may put the students’ lives at risk.

During the team’s visit to the recently upgraded GHSS Jote, the principal and the school management committee chairman informed about the lack of subject teachers, particularly for mathematics and science, it said. The union said it also learned during the visit that “only two students, out of the total 26 who had appeared in the board examination this year from the school, managed to pass while the remaining 16 received compartment and the rest failed.” It said the students had failed or received compartment in only those subjects for which there were no subject teachers. The boys’ hostel is also lying unused for the last many years, the AAPSU said.

“It was also informed that the proposal for boundary wall for the school is reportedly not being looked into by the education department,” it said. Due to the shortage of teachers in those schools, students from the area and nearby villages are forced to seek admission at the GHSS Ganga and the GHSS Balijan, “which is causing overcrowding in both the schools,” it said.
