ITANAGAR: The winter migratory birds, which usually flock to the water bodies of Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary and the surrounding waters of the Siang and Lali rivers, have not arrived this season. Wildlife officials stated that the winter visitors have not been observed gathering at the water bodies this season.
Report says, Daying Ering wildlife Sanctuary, witnesses many winter migratory birds, such as the great cormorant, ruddy shelduck, Indian skimmer, white-winged wood duck, and numerous species,in December and early January.
Flocks of birds from Siberia and Mongolia were observed in the water bodies of Daying Ering Sanctuary and its surrounding areas in mid-December, but they have not arrived this year.
The absence of migratory birds in the water bodies is raising concerns among environmentalists and conservation activists. Zoologists have cited climate change as a key factor contributing to the ecological shift.
Meanwhile, a large flock of migratory birds arrived at Hakama Beel in Bilasipara, while the nearby Mahamaya forest witnessed an increase in the population of rare species of white-ramped vultures.
In order to create awareness about the protection of these birds, the Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam (ASSA) organized a bird-welcoming festival at Bogribari High School in Dhubri district in collaboration with the school on Tuesday.
Secretary-general of ASSA, Dr. Haricharan Das, while speaking in the awareness meeting, highlighted the organization’s efforts to conserve the white-ramped vulture.
