ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) has initiated suo moto action regarding a report on the Ranganadi River turbidity, mass fish deaths, water contamination linked to the 405 MW Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project, spreading a threat to the life of local communities.

As a result, the commission has instructed the deputy commissioners of Keyi Panyor and Papum Pare districts to carry out a joint assessment of the project's effects on downstream populations.

The commission noted that it has been informed that these incidents occur during dam maintenance and have caused significant ecological damage, negative health effects, and disruption of livelihoods for the downstream communities.

The commission also emphasized that downstream communities have expressed serious concerns regarding the substantial ecological degradation of the river. They emphasized the detrimental effects on public health and livelihoods, the insufficient mitigation measures during dam maintenance, and the lack of sustainable solutions that adequately balance development with environmental conservation.

The APSHRC has also directed the Chief General Manager of the North East Electric Power Corporation, Yazali, to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit an action taken report within four weeks.
