ITANAGAR: A meeting of the District Police Complaint Authority (DPCA) for West Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh was held on Thursday with a focus on improving police accountability and creating greater public awareness. Extra assistant commissioner (EAC) Koj Tacho, currently serving as the in-charge deputy commissioner, chaired the meeting. DPCA Chairman and former information commissioner Goto Ete in his keynote address emphasised that 24 states and 7 union territories in the country have implemented Police Complaint Authorities following the Supreme Court’s 2006 directive. He urged the public to utilise the DPCA mechanism for reporting police misconduct. “Any member of the public filing a complaint must enclose an affidavit while submitting it to the DPCA,” he said. The DPCA investigates complaints against police officers below the rank of superintendent of police. It handles serious allegations such as custodial deaths, extortion, and abuse of authority. The authority also ensures witness protection and grants members the right to visit police stations. Aalo, the district headquarters, serves as the central zone for DPCA, covering five districts in the region.
