Itanagar: Gollo Rinu, a trailblazer from Arunachal Pradesh, has made history by becoming the first woman from the state to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering. Her remarkable achievement was celebrated during the 10th Convocation of the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST) on Thursday, marking a milestone not just for her but for the entire state.

Dr Rinu’s groundbreaking research focused on the “Experimental Investigation and Numerical Modelling of Similar and Dissimilar Friction Stir Welding Process.”

Under the mentorship of Dr Yadaiah Nirsanametla and Dr Sandeep Singh from NERIST’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, her work delved into advanced welding techniques that join materials without melting the base metal, offering significant industrial applications.

Born in the humble Rigio village of Mengio circle in Papum Pare district, Dr Rinu’s journey is as inspiring as her achievement. As a first-generation literate, she overcame numerous challenges to rise to academic excellence.

Her parents, Gollo Taru and Gollo Yari, both farmers, instilled in her the values of perseverance and hard work.

She began her education at Government Middle School Sakiang, and later completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at NERIST, setting the foundation for her illustrious academic career.

Currently serving as a guest assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department of the institute, Dr Rinu continues to inspire students with her dedication, resilience, and passion for learning. “Education is the key to unlocking potential. I hope my journey motivates young minds, especially girls, to pursue their dreams fearlessly,” she said.

Dr Rinu’s story is not just about breaking barriers in the field of mechanical engineering; it is about inspiring generations to rise above limitations. From her small village to the halls of a prestigious institute, she has proven that dreams backed by determination can overcome any obstacle.

Her achievement is a beacon of hope for the youth of Arunachal Pradesh and beyond, particularly young women aspiring to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

As she continues to mentor students and contribute to cutting-edge research, Dr. Rinu’s legacy will undoubtedly inspire countless others to dream big and achieve even bigger. Arunachal Pradesh celebrates this proud moment, as Dr Rinu stands as a symbol of determination, excellence, and empowerment.
