ITANAGAR: Siang District Magistrate (DM) P.N. Thungon has announced a ban on hunting wild animals in Arunachal's Siang district through an order issued under Section 152 of the BNSS. According to the order, those who violate this law will face appropriate legal action.

Additionally, the DM instructed licensed arms holders to deposit their firearms, including airguns, at their closest police stations by December 31 at the latest. The order has been addressed to the executive magistrate, police authorities, forest authorities and the GBs to have it implemented in letter and spirit.

In his order, Thungon said that “many individuals are in the regular practice of hunting by using their licensed arms and airguns in the district, in contravention to the Wildlife Prohibition Act, 1972 and the Arms Act, 1959.”

“Such indiscriminate hunting adversely affects the ecosystem of the area; and also many accidents have been reported during hunting and many have also lost their lives,” the DM said in the order.

The order also specified that the arms licence had been issued for particular purposes only, “which do not include hunting for pleasure.”

Earlier in October, to safeguard migratory species, the Mizoram government had temporarily prohibited hunting of birds and other wildlife during the months of October and November. Lalhriatpuia, the district magistrate of Aizawl, gave the order in an effort to protect the area's animals during this crucial time and limited the use of firearms, air rifles, and catapults for hunting.

This action is intended to protect migratory birds, such as the Amur Falcon. The Amur Falcon, referred to locally as "Sialsir," uses Mizoram as a rest stop on its journey from colder northern hemisphere regions to southern Africa.
