ITANAGAR: The state highway connecting Itanagar to Gyekar Sinyi (Ganga Lake) is currently closed following a cave-in near Zoo Road Tinali. The incident occurred when a water supply pipeline from the Poma water supply project burst, coinciding with ongoing construction of a retaining wall intended to protect and widen the road.
Due to the closure, visitors cannot travel to Gyekar Sinyi, a much-admired destination, whereas residents of the Sangdupota circle, who rely on the Itanagar-Jote state highway for connectivity, have to find alternative routes. Moreover, the pipeline damage has caused an interruption in water supply from Poma, making things worse for local residents.
Talo Potom, the Deputy Commissioner of the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), informed the media that restoration efforts are expected to be completed within the next ten days. However, concerns have been raised by locals regarding the pace of the repair work.
A frequent user of the road commented that although early work was rapid, the pace has since then slowed down, underscoring the need to finish repairs before the rainy season sets in.
The cave-in not only disrupted travel and tourism but also raised questions about infrastructure resilience in the region, and it has underscored the need for timely maintenance and construction practices.
