ITANAGAR: In a significant move to improve waste management in Arunachal Pradesh's capital, the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has signed an agreement with 7Hills Nexgram to set up a Municipal Solid Waste Charcoal Plant.

The MoU was signed at the IMC office on Friday in the presence of Mayor Tame Phassang, corporators, and senior officials, a communiqué informed here on Saturday.

Phassang called the initiative historic, addressing the city's ongoing struggle with daily waste disposal.

While stating that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had penalized the city for lacking a proper waste management system, Phassang expressed optimism that the new plant would offer a long-term solution.

Under the agreement, 7Hills Nexgram will fully fund the plant's setup, while IMC will provide degradable and non-degradable waste for processing. The plant will convert waste into charcoal, easing the city's waste management challenges.

"This partnership is a major step toward sustainable waste management. It will not only reduce waste but also transform the dumping ground into a green space, ensuring a cleaner and greener Itanagar," the mayor said.

Chief Operating Officer of 7Hills Nexgram, Bishwajeet Dey, shared that the plant will process 50 metric tonnes of waste daily and will be operational within 120 days. He assured that the facility will be eco-friendly, with zero air pollution, and will handle all waste except medical waste.

The company also plans to turn the Chimpu dumping ground into a green garden within two years.

IMC commissioner Kego Jilen urged the public to support the project by maintaining cleanliness across the city, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation for the initiative's success.
