Itanagar: In a landmark move to modernise its electricity infrastructure, the Arunachal Pradesh government has announced a ₹6,519 crore transformation plan aimed at slashing energy losses, strengthening grid reliability, and ensuring consumer empowerment—without adding fiscal stress.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu said in a post on X , “Our goal is clear—low losses, high reliability, and zero fiscal stress.”
Of the total investment, ₹788 crore will be dedicated to addressing long-standing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, especially in remote and difficult-to-access regions. These inefficiencies have traditionally plagued the state's power distribution system.
A key element of the revamp involves the rollout of smart meters and the development of a modern, intelligent grid. These upgrades aim to provide real-time monitoring, accurate billing, and improved energy accountability for consumers.
“The introduction of smart meters will empower users with greater control over electricity consumption while reducing wastage,” Khandu explained.
Importantly, to keep public finances stable, the state will offer gap funding to bridge the difference between capital costs and actual recoveries—ensuring that the ambitious programme doesn’t become a financial burden.
The initiative is also expected to pave the way for future industrial growth and rural electrification, supporting Arunachal’s vision of long-term, sustainable development.
With this power sector overhaul, Arunachal Pradesh positions itself as a forward-thinking, energy-secure state—ready to meet both current and future energy demands with transparency, efficiency, and fiscal prudence.
