ITANAGAR: In a landmark judgment, Papum Pare district and sessions judge has sentenced to life imprisonment Majibur Rahman, the main accused in the 2008 Akashdeep twin rape and murder case. The judgment brings closure to a more than-a-decade-old case in a long-awaited manner.

Rahman, who was evading the law for a decade, was apprehended by the Itanagar police last year following a detailed manhunt. He had escaped from Jully jail in 2012 along with two other undertrial prisoners and had evaded justice for years before being nabbed finally.

A resident of Gohaidholoni village in the Sunapur circle of North Lakhimpur district in Assam, Rahman was a chronic criminal before committing the heinous crime in 2008. A professional thief, he was a member of a gang that had committed several robberies in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

His acts of brutality intensified to new heights when accompanied by Md Najirul Islam and a minor offender, he brutally murdered and raped two sisters operating a beauty parlor in the Akashdeep market.

After their arrest, a trial led to Najirul Islam being sentenced to life imprisonment when they appeared before the court, and he was already serving the term at Jully jail.

Commenting on the conviction, Itanagar Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh stated, "We followed the trial process in good faith, and now he has been convicted of life imprisonment, ending the case. The conviction is not only the culmination of a long-pending investigation but also a statement of the commitment and determination of the Itanagar police team towards delivering justice."
