PASIGHAT: A massive fire broke out at the Pasighat vegetable daily market near IGJ Higher Secondary School and the airport area in Arunachal Pradesh's East Siang district on Tuesday, officials said.

East Siang's disaster management officer, Tsangpa Tashi, claimed that the fire broke out around 9 pm, resulting in the destruction of all vegetable and clothing sheds in the market. According to preliminary reports, the fire destroyed a total of 108 shops with a loss of around ₹2 crore.

The fire service team from the Pasighat fire station eventually extinguished the fire, but significant damage had already occurred, reducing most market sheds to ashes. The blaze destroyed several structures, including vegetable and fruit sheds, footwear stalls, grocery shops, small hotels, and shops selling clothes and stationery.

Tashi, citing an eyewitness, speculated that a short circuit might have started the fire, although no casualties have been reported so far.

A standing board, including Chairman Olak Apang, AEs from Electrical and PHED, OC from Fire, OC from PS, and the DDMO, visited the site on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by the fire.

The board met with the affected business owners, who were primarily shopkeepers dealing in items such as vegetables, spices, fruits, clothes, groceries, and footwear.

Inspection officials have instructed victims to submit necessary documents, such as trading licenses, bank passbooks, and Aadhar cards, to the DDMO's office for expedited relief assistance from the government.
