ITANAGAR: National Commission for Women (NCW) has sent summons to well-known YouTuber Elvish Yadav to appear before the panel on February 17, 2025 after he was charged with using a racial slur against Bollywood actor and Big Boss contestant Chum Darang.
The NCW summon is a follow-up on the complaint by Chairperson of Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) Kenjum Pakam, who highlighted Yadav's abusive comments.
In the notice, the NCW stated, "It has been intimated that you have posted a derogatory and racist remark against ex-Miss Arunachal and Big Boss contestant Chum Darang, referring to her name as 'ashleel'." The commission highlighted the seriousness of the issue, stating that the failure to turn up might invite further action.
Pakam's letter to the NCW highlighted the larger significance of Yadav's remarks, claiming that they not only belittled Darang but also insulted women from Northeast India in general. Darang addressed the controversy by stating, "Disrespecting a person's identity and name is not amusing. Making fun of someone's success is not 'banter'. It's time we establish the line between humor and hate.
The NCW move reflects increasing concern with the role being played by social media influencers on the psyche of society and the necessity for responsibility in public conversation.
