Pasighat: The East Siang District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), in collaboration with H-Spring Foundation, organized a one-day free legal awareness programme for parents of children with special needs in Pasighat on Monday.
The programme, conducted under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA), aimed to empower parents by educating them about their legal rights, entitlements, and the support systems available under Indian law.
Dr. Oimang Megu, Chairperson of H-Spring Foundation, emphasized the critical need for legal awareness among parents of children with special needs. Advocate Dobuk Gao highlighted the rights of children with disabilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016, and the Right to Education Act, 2009.
Detailed information was provided on government schemes, including the National Trust Act, which offers support to individuals with autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and multiple disabilities.
Advocate Sunny Tayeng provided insights into the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, which offer protection to children with special needs.
DLSA members explained the availability of free legal aid services to children with special needs and their families. They emphasized the importance of inclusive education and vocational training for children with disabilities and explained the legal provisions ensuring their access to equal educational opportunities.
An interactive Q&A session allowed parents to raise concerns and seek personalized legal advice from experts.
The programme successfully empowered parents with crucial legal knowledge, enabling them to better advocate for the rights and well-being of their children.
