ITANAGAR: The state unit of the BJP convened a condolence meeting at the party’s head office here on Saturday to mourn the sudden demise of veteran political figure and former Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya. Acharya, who passed away on Friday, was 92 years old and survived by his wife, Kavita Acharya, three sons, and a daughter. The condolence meeting was attended by the party’s state vice presidents, Tarh Tarak and Nani Lajie, Secretary Tadar Niglar, and the party’s spokesman, Techi Necha, among others. Tarak dwelt on the biography of Acharya, who served as governor of the state, was associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and was a member of Mumbai University's senate. He was credited with planning the University of Delhi's Gyanodaya Express college on wheels to North East India. In 1980, Acharya joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected the BJP President of North West Bombay District in 1987. Later, in 1989, he became a committee member of the Mumbai BJP. In 1991, he was elected a national executive member of the BJP in charge of the North Eastern States of India, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
Tarak added that Acharya was appointed governor of Nagaland in July 2014 and has been in additional charge of the governorships of Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, and he was popularly known as the governor of the northeast. Tai Tagak, advisor to the chief minister, highlighted in detail the activities carried out in the North East by Acharya. He added that Acharya’s message was to connect with good people who are working for society, people, and the nation. The BJP leaders also paid floral tributes to Acharya and prayed for his eternal peace.
