JAMUGURIHAT: The Centre for Bear Rehabilitation and Conservation (CBRC) at Pakke Tiger Reserve, a pioneering facility dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of Asiatic Black Bears, has been awarded the State Gold Medal for its exceptional contributions to wildlife conservation, stated a press release issued by the Divisional Forest Officer, Pakke WLS & Tiger Reserve, Seijosa, Arunachal Pradesh.

The prestigious award was received by Satyaprakash Singh IFS, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) & Field Director, Pakke Tiger Reserve, along with Dr Panjit Basumatary, representative of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), at a ceremony held at Raj Bhawan, Itanagar. Established in 2003, CBRC is a collaborative initiative between the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of Arunachal Pradesh (Arunachal FD), and the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). Located at Seijosa, West Bank, Pakke Tiger Reserve, the centre serves as a crucial hub for bear conservation, rehabilitation, and welfare.

CBRC operates under a Governing Council, chaired by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Principal Secretary, Department of Environment & Forests, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The DFO of Pakke Tiger Reserve functions as the Member Secretary and Project Leader, ensuring that the centre adheres to Central Zoo Authority (CZA) regulations. The Forest Department provides statutory and logistical support, while WTI oversees project implementation. The initiative is primarily funded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and other national agencies. One of CBRC’s most remarkable achievements has been the successful rescue and rehabilitation of over 60 Asiatic Black Bear cubs back into the wild. Through meticulous care, scientific methods, and a well-structured rehabilitation process, the centre has given these rescued bears a second chance at life in their natural habitat.

CBRC remains steadfast in its mission of wildlife rehabilitation, scientific research, and capacity building, contributing significantly to the conservation of Arunachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity. The centre continues to play a vital role in rescuing and rehabilitating Asiatic Black Bears, ensuring their well-being and, when possible, their reintegration into the wild. The Gold Medal recognition for Pakke Tiger Reserve underscored CBRC’s excellence in wildlife conservation and management. The organization expressed its deep gratitude to all stakeholders, conservation partners, and supporters for their continued commitment to this cause.
