ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Animal Husbandry & Dairy Minister Gabriel D Wangsu has pitched for a paradigm shift in livestock farming in the state and stressed the need to modernize the sector to attract young entrepreneurs.
The minister was speaking on the second day of the 'Conclave on Dialogue for Holistic Development of Livestock Sectors in the North-East Region,' chaired by Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying S P Singh Baghel at Shillong on Friday, an official release informed here on Saturday.
The conclave focused on addressing the challenges and opportunities of the livestock sector in the region.
Wangsu expressed concern over the declining livestock population in Arunachal Pradesh, citing factors like genetic regression and an ageing farmer population.
He advocated for comprehensive training programs, mentorship initiatives, and the implementation of the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) to equip youth with the necessary skills for modern livestock farming.
To incentivize young entrepreneurs, Wangsu proposed financial support mechanisms, similar to the Unnati scheme, as well as robust insurance options to mitigate risks.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening animal health services by establishing a network of 'Pranibandhu' (animal health workers) at the village level and leveraging technology through telemedicine and digital platforms to improve access to veterinary care.
