Arunachal Pradesh Governor BD Mishra calls for plantation drive to minimize landslides

ITANAGAR: Expressing concern over large-scale landslides in different parts of the State triggered by monsoon rain, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) Dr BD Mishra on Wednesday asked Environment & Forest and Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Mama Natung to organize mass tree plantations throughout the State.

The Governor's advice came when Natung called on him at the Raj Bhawan here during the day and discussed about promotion of sports and youth activities, besides safeguarding forest land for conservation and protection of the State's rich flora and fauna.

The Governor emphasised on more games and sports activities to promote healthy sporting competitions among the youths of the State. He also laid stress on utilizing the services of games and sports achievers in popularizing various sporting disciplines.

Mishra advised the Minister to organize youth conventions and interactions to create awareness about drug abuse and other social evils, a Raj Bhawan communiqué informed.

"The 'Youth of the Day' must be encouraged, given the opportunity and avenue to cultivate nationalism and progressive coexistence. They have a role to play in addressing social issues, including protecting the environment, preserving the good age-old traditions, eliminating evil social customs and contributing to socio-economic development," the Governor said.

Complimenting Natung for his initiative of 'Air Gun Surrender Abhiyan', Mishra said that it is the responsibility of every Arunachali to protect the flora and fauna of the State.

He also called for conservation and protection of forest lands, the communiqué added.
