ITANAGAR: In a major initiative to promote organic farming and sustainable agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, in collaboration with ICAR-National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms (NBAIM), organised a capacity building and input distribution programme, on Thursday.

The event, attended by 150 farmers, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), and allied department officials, aimed at reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and introducing advanced agricultural technologies.

District agriculture officer (DAO) Toli Bam, in his address, emphasised the need for suitable crop varieties and advanced technologies to boost productivity in the region.

He also encouraged farmers to enhance vegetable production, including exotic varieties, to meet the demands of the Army and paramilitary forces, ensuring better market opportunities.

Senior scientists and head of KVK Tawang Dr A N Tripathi highlighted the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, while NBAIM scientist Dr Anchal K Srivastava conducted a session on the benefits of organic farming, urging farmers to adopt vermicomposting as an income-generating venture. A hands-on training session on vermicomposting was conducted to educate farmers on sustainable waste management and soil enrichment techniques. To support agricultural activities, farmers were provided with vermibeds, sprayers, polythene sheets for polyhouses, and vegetable seeds. The event concluded with an interactive session where farmers shared their experiences, and experts offered insights to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region.
