ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Gabriel D Wangsu has raised concerns over the declining population of Mithun in the Longchan circle of Longding district in the state and urged villagers to prioritize its rearing to sustain the valued animal.

"Arunachal Pradesh accounts for nearly 90 percent of India's Mithun population, with our region being one of the highest contributors. It is crucial for us to focus on increasing Mithun rearing," Wangsu emphasized while addressing the villagers.

The minister announced plans to organize a special program in Longchan dedicated to Mithun conservation and rearing practices. He also highlighted recent initiatives by the state government, including the official recognition of Mithun as a food animal, with its meat now named "Wesi."

Wangsu called for active community participation to ensure the success of government schemes aimed at Mithun conservation and other developmental programmes. He stressed that collective efforts from the community and government will play a pivotal role in preserving the heritage and economic value associated with Mithun rearing.
