ITANAGAR: A day-long state-level seminar on women’s health was organized by the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) at Tawang on Friday, which was sponsored by the National Commission for Women and supported by the district administration and Women’s Welfare Association of the border district. Speaking at the inaugural session, Tawang deputy commissioner Kesang Ngurup Damo lauded the APSCW and NCW for organizing such an important programme focusing on the general and mental health of women in the district. He commended the WWA of Tawang and its members for their contribution to keeping Tawang clean. He asked all women in the district to take active part in the social activities of WWA.

The DC informed that recently, the new Child Welfare Committee of the district has also been constituted, headed by Norbu Drema, a retired headmistress. Damo further informed the Commission that it recently celebrated International Women’s Day in the district in collaboration with WWA Tawang under the Arunachal Rising Campaign and felicitated the first lady doctor of the district and other young women giving their service in central paramilitary forces in different parts of the country.

APSCW Chairman Kenjum Pakam informed that the programme was organized under the direction of NCW. She stated that, as per the One Stop Centre report, cases of domestic violence in Tawang are minimal; hence, it was more appropriate that the seminar on women’s health for Tawang be conducted. Tawang ZPC Leki Gombu expressed his gratitude to the APSCW for visiting Tawang and guiding the women of the district. He asked the participants to attend the technical session and benefit from the knowledge shared by resource persons.

Gombu also asked WWA Tawang to extend their support in rooting out wild cannabis before flowering and assured cooperation from PRI members and villagers for the noble cause. Later, 15 beneficiaries trained in baking, displayed their baked cakes of different flavours. The unemployed women were trained by Sonam Lhamo of Yura Tsangpo Patisserie, and the training programme has been sponsored by APSCW with local support from WWA Tawang. The beneficiaries were also felicitated for the successful completion of their training.

In the technical session, gynaecologist Dr. Tenzin Kunga from KDS Hospital gave information on breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers, common reproductive health issues, and maternal health issues, while Dr. Tashi Sangmo gave awareness on depression and anxiety. APSCW member Kago T. Yassung also spoke in length on women’s health issues, as an official communiqué informed.
