Arunachal Pradesh to Prepare 2nd Human Development Report

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Government has signed an agreement with an institute based in Guwahati in Assam to prepare the second Human Development Report (HDR) for the State.

The State Government had inked the agreement with the OKD Institute of Social Change and Development to prepare the report which would be centred on the theme ‘Rethinking Sustainability with global and national commitment on sustainable development goals i.e Planet and People for prosperity’.

State Planning & Investment secretary Himanshu Gupta and Institute’s director-in-charge Prof Kalyan Das signed the agreement on Thursday in presence of Chief Secretary Satya Gopal and senior officers of the state Govt government.

The report is expected to be submitted by the institute within a period of 18 months, an official statement informed here Saturday.

The State Government felt that there is an urgent need to prepare the second report using the latest available data as the first report which was published almost 14 years back for which state planners, academicians, research scholars and policymakers have been facing to work in their respective fields, the statement informed said. The first Human Development Report for the state was launched in 2005 in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi University here.

“The major motivation to bring out the HDR was that there should be people centered development. The Human Development Index not only focus on economic opulence but also other aspects of human lives,” the statement said.

State Chief Secretary Satya Gopal has assured full support to the institute in its assigned work and expressed hope that the report would address the issue of inequality in human development in Arunachal Pradesh.

While expressing his opinion in the manner in which the study for preparation of the report should be undertaken, the chief secretary advised that the report should provide a framework to look at inequality trends, understand their drivers, their impact as well as provide a framework that could help in taking informed policy decisions in order to ensure sustainable development and reduction in inequalities in society, the statement added.
