Itanagar: In a study conducted by the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2019, Arunachal Pradesh has ranked second among the states with the highest tobacco consumers in school students.

This has been considered a matter of great concern by the administration of Arunachal Pradesh who have taken a step forward in an attempt to curb the consumption of tobacco in educational institutions.

The Deputy Commissioner of Itanagar Capital Complex has appraised the team of District Tobacco Cell (DTCC) for the implementation of the Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) campaign in the capital city.

Strict action against the violators of ToFEI has been ordered by the Deputy Commissioner in addition to the timely inspections of all educational institutions.

In a meeting headed by the DC, an order was issued to monitor the strict adherence to the rules of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA) 2013 in the areas surrounding the schools and other educational institutions.

Any person found violating the order would have to face dire consequences such as sealing or shutting down of shops.

Awareness programs at a community level have also been suggested by the Deputy Commissioner.

The Deputy Commissioner also added, "For de-addiction of tobacco consumption, the Tobacco Cessation Centre under NCD clinic, TRIHMS, Naharlagun is providing free consultation and medicine to those addicted persons which need to be highlighted in better platforms to reach out to the maximum public."
