ITANAGAR: A rare sighting was reported on Saturday afternoon when a pair of black-necked cranes was seen between Morshing and Domkho villages in the West Kameng district. This is the first reported case of such rare birds, said Lobjang Nima, secretary of the Kunphen Residential School in Morshing.
Nima further said that the cranes were identified by teachers Tenzin Phuntsok, Rinchin Wangdi, Sangey Tenzin, among others. The student highlighted the significance of the bird-spotting event by saying, "I have informed all the villagers about these migratory birds and requested them not to disturb them during their stay."
Meanwhile, residents of Sangti Valley reported that two black-necked cranes, which were spotted there last month, could not be found in the valley for the past two days. According to Range Forest Officer Yachang Kani of Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, this may be a result of having shifted to an alternative habitat. Kani will head to the Morshing and Domkho villages on Sunday to ascertain whether these newly sighted cranes are the same ones that were earlier sighted at Sangti.
Sangti Valley is reported as a wintering ground for black-necked cranes in Dirang subdivision. With growing human activity in the area, it becomes an immense challenge to the birds' natural habitat and well-being. The situation is under observation as the local authorities ensure the safety of the auspicious cranes.
