Dibang: A special water education programme created by the University of Cambridge has started in 16 private schools in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley district. The programme, called Pani Pahar, began in June 2025 and has already reached 469 students.

The lessons focus on water, where it comes from, why it is important, how to use it wisely, and the water challenges faced in the Himalayan region. The content has been adjusted to fit local culture and surroundings so students can relate it to their daily lives.

Each school has formed a Mobius Eco Club to lead activities and share ideas. Every Friday, students take part in a “Green Friday” drive, collecting waste from their surroundings and bringing it to school for proper disposal. Other activities include mapping nearby water bodies, identifying plants and animals, drawing, and giving presentations.

R.K. Paul Chawang, President of AMYAA NGO, which is helping run the project in the state, said it mixes global environmental education with traditional local knowledge to “build a new generation of young leaders who can protect the environment and make Arunachal Pradesh climate-resilient.”
