ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh sculptor Dr. Bahom Kaling Darang will be showcasing his work at the prestigious annual show of the Society of Portrait Sculptors in the UK, taking place from March 17 to 30, 2025, in London. It is the 61st year of the exhibition where Dr. Darang’s piece, titled ‘The Konyak,’ will be on display.
Currently based in Guwahati, Assam, Dr. Darang is a dental surgeon by profession but has pursued his passion for sculpture alongside his medical career.
He will travel to London next week to attend the exhibition. In an interview, he explained the rigorous selection process for artists wishing to exhibit their work. “It involves a two-stage elimination process. Initially, artists submit photographs and videos of their work, from which the jury selects a shortlist. Those selected must then send their physical pieces for final consideration,” he stated.
Dr. Darang shared that the competition is very high, with about 100 exhibits being featured annually, two-thirds of which are available for international submissions. He was thankful to have been chosen, considering that only a handful of artists are granted this recognition each year.
Having built up his techniques through self-practice and workshops with renowned Spanish and Italian sculptors, Dr. Darang emphasizes making sculptures depicting different tribes of Northeast India, especially those of Arunachal Pradesh, to share their cultural heritage with a wider audience.
