
ITANAGAR: Seijosa police, in association with Assam police of Gingia police station in Bishwanath Charali district, arrested a suspected accused in a massive cheating case related to the National Savings Scheme (NSS) of the postal department.
The accused, Umesh Hazarika, a resident of Nopama village in Bishwanath Charali district, Assam, was arrested on Wednesday. His father, Gono Kanta Hazarika, who was also a suspect in the fake scheme, had been arrested earlier, police sources confirmed.
The operation to search out Umesh Hazarika was headed by Seijosa police station officer-in-charge (OC) SI Sang Thinley, SI Duyu Talley, and constables N. Ete and F. Wangsa, guided by SDPO Sashi Dore and with close surveillance by Pakke Kessang SP Tasi Darang. The police were able to conduct a thorough investigation through technical and human intelligence, raiding several places before they finally arrested the accused.
Based on a tip-off, Seijosa police, along with the support of Gingia police station of Bishwanath Charali district, managed to arrest Nopama village's Umesh Hazarika on Wednesday morning. His arrest is a breakthrough in the case, which has resulted in great financial losses for unsuspecting victims.
The case was first registered at Seijosa police station on August 14, 2024, under sections 316(4)/318(4)/115(2)/351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), on a complaint lodged by Nyaken Nomdir of Namorah village, Dising Paso in Pakke Kessang. After the FIR was filed, Umesh Hazarika escaped to Bengaluru, Karnataka, trying to escape arrest.
The accused, the police said, had been operating a scam where victims were enticed with promises of heavy returns on investment under National Savings Scheme.
The accused and his father are accused of misappropriating around Rs 20 lakh collected money instead of depositing it at the Mejecajan sub-post office in Assam. Their deceit left several victims financially ruined, prompting the authorities to initiate a large-scale probe to nail them.
