ITANAGAR: The TRIHMS Faculty Association has announced that it will stage a protest on Saturday morning after an alarming incident involving the parked vehicle of a faculty member.
The car, which was parked in neutral gear as per the hospital's parking guidelines, was attacked with a “dao” (machete) on Friday.
While no one was hurt physically, the association has been very vocal about its grave concerns regarding the safety and security of healthcare workers in TRIHMS. According to the association, it "was a serious threat to staff at the hospitals."
In a letter to the chief medical superintendent, the association highlighted the breach of security that enabled such an attack and pointed to the Arunachal Pradesh Protection of Medical Service Personnel and Medical Service Institutions Act, 2019. It states that the safety of the medical staff and the facility is mandated, and the association stated that the hospital's existing security arrangement did not meet the criteria set by the act.
The incident has also increased the fears because it comes in the wake of the recent massacre at Seppa District Hospital, where a “dao”-wielding assailant caused multiple casualties within hospital premises. The association proposed several security measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
These measures include installing dedicated parking for hospital staff and keeping it under surveillance day and night. They proposed weapon screening at all vehicle entry and exit points. Security guards shall be placed at all the gates and entry points at all times. They further demanded an existing law prohibiting violent elements against medical persons be implemented.
The association appealed to the hospital authorities to implement these measures immediately and to ensure robust security protocols to protect healthcare workers. They also raised concern over the lack of progress in identifying the attacker and urged the authorities to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrator to justice.
On Saturday, the association will organize a protest in order to highlight the issue of the dire need for enhanced security measures at the hospital, TRIHMS. The association reiterated its pledge to make healthcare workers' safety secure and urged both the hospital administration and the state government to take action.
