ITANAGAR: A short story of an Arunachalee writer has been included in a book published from Singapore, bringing cheers among the literature lovers in the northeastern State.

The story 'Local', by Gankhu Sumnyan, an Assistant Professor of English at Wangcha Rajkumar Government College at Deomali in the Tirap district, has been included in the 'The Best Asian Short Stories-2021' book, published from Singapore.

There are only a few writers from the State whose literary works are internationally appreciated and recognised.

The fifth edition of the book series for the year 2021 has been released by the publication house Kitaab, Singapore recently and is available on Amazon.

The editor of the book, Malachi Edwin Vethamani, and series editor Zafar Anjum, selected Sumnyan's short story for the fifth edition along with 20 other writers from different countries. The 35-year-old Sumnyan is also the president of the Tirap district unit of Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) and is associated with creative writing from his school days. His poetry collection 'Old Friends' Parade' was shortlisted for the Satish Verma Young Writers' Award 2015, organised by Muse India.

His poems have been published in the journals like Indian Literature and The Little Journal of Northeast India. He has also published short stories in various magazines.

Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society president Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi and general secretary Mukul Pathak in a press statement congratulated Sumnyan and expressed the hope that his success would lead many Arunachalee writers to go for literary work in coming days.
