ITANAGAR: Aohali village in the East Siang district has undertaken the bold step of adopting a zero hunting policy, which will go a long way in conserving wildlife and ensuring sustainable development. On Monday, an important milestone was achieved when a welcome gate bearing the message 'Aohali – Zero Hunting Village' was inaugurated.

The ceremony was attended by Mutchu Mithi, adviser to the home minister, local MLA Oken Tayeng, and other dignitaries including MLAs Tapi Darang and Oni Panyang.

The declaration of Aohali as a zero hunting village is a self-imposed commitment by its people, mainly belonging to the Idu-Mishmi tribe, towards much-needed conservation of biodiversity and redressing ecological imbalances. This step has marked a departure from the conventional tradition of hunting that has been in vogue among the tribes for long. However, the community is conscious of the need for conserving their habitat and wildlife.

The local MLA, Oken Tayeng, rightly focused on the fact that this endeavour is not only to save nature but also goes forward in improving the livelihoods of villagers through agriculture, horticulture, and tourism. Sustainable practices will help the community preserve its indigenous traditions while adapting to the modern ecological challenges.

The zero hunting village initiative comes under the larger scheme of Eco Clean Mebo Mission. Environmental awareness and sustainable development of the region are the prime objectives.
