ITANAGAR: A 33-year-old man was arrested in Arunachal Pradesh’s Gumto village for attempting to deceive a shopkeeper using a counterfeit PhonePe application.

The accused, identified as Biren Nayak from Dhekiajulia in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, was apprehended by Doimukh Police with the assistance of personnel at the Gumto Check Gate.

The incident occurred on January 6 when Nayak visited a grocery store in his locality and made an online payment of ₹5,000, according to him, through the PhonePe app. Within some time, Nayak again returned with a demand for ₹5,000. Suspecting that he was being duped, the shopkeeper verified his bank account and found that there was no such payment.

On further investigation, it was established that Nayak had used a forged version of the PhonePe app to conduct the simulation process and deceive the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper immediately reported it to the authorities. Nayak was subsequently arrested by the authorities.
