Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav: Schools urged to make weaving a part of curriculum in Arunachal

ITANAGAR: In order to preserve and promote the age-old tradition of loin loom weaving of Arunachal Pradesh, a documentary on loin loom weaving with the title 'Celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav through loin loom weaving of Arunachal Pradesh' was screened at Raj Bhavan here on Monday for the students and Socially Useful Productive Works (SUPW) teachers of the State capital schools.

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra's wife Neelam Mishra, officers from Textiles and Handicrafts Department and special invitees attended the event.

Championing the cause of traditional weaving, Mishra emphasized safeguarding and endorsement of the customary time-honoured practice, which also has great socio-economic significance in the society, particularly for the financial empowerment of women.

She reiterated that the craft is the garment identity of Arunachali women and it must be promoted with pride.

Mishra advised the students to learn loin loom weaving. She also advised the SUPW teachers and school authorities to make the Arunachali customary weaving a part of their school curriculum.

"The initiative by the State Education Department will go a long way in preserving the weaving custom bequeathed to us by our forebears," she said

A large number of students from various schools of the capital attended the screening.

Conceptualized by Mishra, the documentary has been produced by the State Information & Public Relations (IPR) Department and filmed by Maya Films, Bangalore. It highlights the roots of loin loom weaving, its history, the uniqueness and beauty of the products.
